Unit 1 Task 3
Audience Profile
Joe is 19. He has just recently started work to help his family as they are struggling financially. Joe left school with 5 GCSEs from C to B. Later in life Joe wants to become a doctor, as he likes the idea of helping people. He also like the comedy Scrubs, as he likes the serial element it has. His favorite film actor is will smith, as he likes his acting style. However he has recently become a big fan of western shows like The Walking Dead. He regularly watches BBC news and listens to Sheffield live! And follows many of their shows weekly.
He enjoys the music that Sheffield Live! Has to offer. It music is unique as it appeals to the ethnic minorities which he is part of. His favorite show on Sheffield Live is the podcast Sheffield In Focus. He likes the people who present it as they have similar opinions.
Joe recently has become a user of social networking and likes to interact with the Sheffield Live! Community via social networking sites. Joe and is friends like to go to events and help with the community, since Joe has become part of the Sheffield Live! Community he has gained lots of friends as he is mixed with lots of people from different cultures and of different ethnicity. This has also expanded his knowledge of different cultures. He enjoys going to crystal peaks a lot as it has everything he needs including his favorite brands Adidas and Nike. Him and his friends shop there often.
The general demographic i would say for people who listen to sheffield live i would say is C1C2D. This is because people who mainly listen to sheffield live are from poorer backgrounds or ethnic minorities, meaning that they will not be educated to a high standard and will probably only have a few skills in working, however that is general. Meaning that there will be people that are not C1 C2 or D listening in but typically they will fit in these categories.

audience you have identified want to consume the text?
Because sheffield live aims to help people of ethnic minorities. So the audience would benefit from sheffield lives aim. It might help them interact more in the general community and feel comfortable around people and the area and build a personal identity. It would enhance their lives as it gives them opportunities and in some cases a education on different topics. People will also follow as they might like the presenters and might be interested in their lives, and hold a personal relationship with them.
What makes them want
to listen to the show? How does the show enhance their lives?
The show enhances their lives as it will give people a part in the community and a chance to get involved with other people of different backgrounds etc. The show also talks about things such as: politics and shows, which might be an interest to some people and may educate them into the subject - surveillance, therefore that would enhance their lives, and will want them to follow and listen to the show. It might also offer escapism for some people who feel down about their lives and this show might enhance their lives.
A - Attention: Sheffield live uses this by using a unique style of introduction that would appeal to people around that age group.
I - Interest: Sheffield live does when they play adverts such as mercury taxis. Which list serval advantages when they talk about it in the advert briefly.
D - Desire: Interests leads to desire so in this case it mercury taxis. You would probably become more interests in the service and start to use it, occasionally and build a relationship with the company and that strengthens you connection with sheffield live.
A - Action: This is when you have a strong connection with sheffield live (or anyone else), and you start to trust their opinion and take action towards their recommendations etc.

Target Demographic
- Sheffield Live! will focus on the urban inner city core of the Sheffield metropolitan area which is a relatively compact and distinct zone, just over 5km radius and having some of the highest levels of urban deprivation in the UK. This area is roughly defined by the ten inner city wards of Central, Nether Edge, Broomhill, Crookes, Walkley, Burngreave, Manor, Arbourthorne, Gleadless and Darnall, with a total population of 190,000 people. It is notable for its cultural diversity, its relatively young population and its relatively high levels of unemployment and economic inactivity.
- Black and ethnic minorities make up an average of 21 per cent of the population across the proposed coverage area (40,000) the largest single group being Pakistani (7.2 per cent) and others including Caribbean, Somali, Yemeni, Indian, Bangladeshi, Chinese, Irish and Eastern European. There is also a large student population with two major universities and including significant numbers of international students.
- Young people aged 16 to 35 make up 36 per cent of the population compared to 28 per cent for Sheffield as a whole. Of the economically active population 9.2 per cent (7,500 people) are unemployed, compared to 6.6 per cent for Sheffield as a whole.

A majority of the Sheffield Live! community are young men under 35. Of the sample surveyed 22 per cent were 16 or under, 49 per cent were in the range 17 to 25, 18 per cent were in the range 26 to 35, and 11 per cent were 36 or older. Men disproportionately outnumbered women at Sheffield Live! by a ratio of 3 to 1.
Our survey results and other quantitative evidence that we have gathered shows the demand and support for Sheffield Live! to be predominantly from young people, especially men, who are unemployed or on low income and have few educational qualifications, with a majority being from black and ethnic minorities. This profile is consistent with Sheffield Live! objective to combat disadvantage and exclusion. It will also inform our future outreach programme which will include particular initiatives to involve more women and to increase participation from the Pakistani community.

We currently broadcast on the Internet four days per week, Friday to Monday, a total of 72 hours. In time for the launch of the community radio service we will review the programming and increase the hours to a minimum of 17 hours per day and more at weekends. The normal broadcast hours for live programming will be as follows:
Monday – Thursday 7.00am to midnight Friday – Sunday 7.00 am to 2.00am
Monday – Thursday 7.00am to midnight Friday – Sunday 7.00 am to 2.00am
Automated output will have a music mix that reflects the diversity of Sheffield Live!

Use Of Jingles (Sound Branding)
Introduction is quite unique. Has guitar playing as main instrument. Has a folk music feel to it. When listening to the introduction it has a peaceful and calming feel to it, which make this suitable to a younger audience and will probably appeal more to ethnic minorities as it is a friendly calming introduction.

They always have a guest on, who talks about what they do and why they are here. They also hire presenters from different ethnic minorities to become presenters. This will be to give the show variety and add to the ethnic minority support that sheffield live try to achieve.

Sheffield Live! will sound distinctly different from other local services in the area and has already demonstrably built it own niche and community profile. There is no local commercial radio service dedicated to Sheffield. Hallam FM and Magic AM are both South Yorkshire wide services catering also for Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham and both have a mainstream popular music format with Hallam FM playing mainly chart music and Magic AM carrying easy listening. Galaxy FM (dance/RnB) and Real Radio (music and talk) are regional services not based in South Yorkshire. BBC Radio Sheffield has a higher speech content but caters for an older audience.
